What the FLICK?! Do you see what I see?

I’m so bored by the unoriginal, and the use of controversial as a means to get my attention.

So, here’s the scoop: FLICK OFF is a movement to fight climate change by getting Canadians to use less energy.

“We only have 10 years to dramatically reduce emissions or else we’re screwed.” is the message you will see when you visit the FLICK OFF website.

I saw the ad tonight on TV, and had to check out the website to see if my hunch about their marketing strategy was right.

BINGO!! It couldn’t have been any more predictable, with buzz words like: FLICKFEST, QUICK FLICK, FLICKING HILARIOUS, FLICK YOURSELF, FLICK SOMEONE OFF, ARE WE FLICKED and so much more.

Throughout the website, the message (albeit serious) goes on and on just like this:

“… getting back to sustaining a healthy environment. If we don’t FLICK OFF right now, then we’re this close to being FLICKed for good.”

One minute the plea sounds believable, the next minute, like a teenager kickin’ it with the bro’s. After skimming the website and reading a few paragraphs, it got old real fast.

I’ll admit it grabbed my attention at first. So did Madonna – but not for long. I’ve always tuned that out, and thought that people who consistently used that four letter word needed to grab a thesaurus and expand their vocabulary.

Its obvious that my parents are NOT the target audience. The babyboomers… nah – we’ve seen this before – yawn. BUT my stepson… now he is going to think this is FLICKing awesome dude!! (insert eyeroll here)

I’m serious it’s SO done! French Connection UK, have marketed their clothing and accessory lines for years as FCUK. You can purchase T-shirts branding: ‘to busy to fcuk‘, ‘cool as fcuk‘ and ‘fcuk it‘.

So, what do YOU think of this marketing strategy… is it brilliant or just plain boring?

In my opinion — its both. Brilliant because it got my attention. Boring because this ploy is so yesterday.

“If anyone can stop global warming, it’s you. Don’t be fooled by politics or pessimists. YOU have the power to FLICK OFF. And here’s what you can FLICKing do about it.”

If that doesn’t motivate you, then, how about in all seriousness:

Please take the time to find out how you can help stop global warming and visit the FLICK OFF website. Have a few laughs if you must, but do the right thing: be responsible and FLICK OFF… I have.
