Shoppers Inc. - mystery shopper scam!

Shoppers Inc. Mystery Shopper Scam

Look closer… much closer! If it looks too good to be true, it is! Scams are everywhere, and unless people blow the horn on them, they will continue to take advantage of unsuspecting people.

I was prompted to blog about this scam as it is good… it looks very legit, and apparently many people are being taken in by companies just like this one.

Today, I received a congratulations letter along with a nice hefty (legit looking CIBC Toronto) cheque in the sum of $4650.00 CDN from a company who calls themselves “Shoppers Inc.”

Scope Creep - taming the savage beast!

Taming the wild beast - Scope Creep

A while back, I was hired by a company to assist them with their website. We sat down over a great cuppa java and hashed out a game plan for what was to be a relatively small job.

As per usual, I outlined all the project’s details in a Proposed Scope of Work, along with a quote and payment time-line. Company approved the details, appreciated the timely manner in which I would submit the deliverables, and cut me a cheque for the deposit.

As the project neared completion, the client began submitting requests to also “just add this” and “quickly do that”… all of which were not ‘quick/simple’ tasks, nor included in the agreed upon Scope of Work.

This scenario - commonly known as Scope Creep - is absolutely frustrating for all, and can be the death of a potentially great business relationship if not addressed early on.

Last night Rastin, Arash, and myself held a Joomla 1.5 DemoCamp at the Network Hub in Vancouver. Turn out was really good! The feedback that I’ve received already indicates that this event was a success, with attendees’ passions ignited, and truly excited about using Joomla 1.5 themselves!

Wordpress Weekend - now that’s an upgrade!

February 25th, 2008

WordPress Org

So… what did you do this weekend? Take a walk by the ocean? Eat at Pajo’s Fish and Chips? Maybe catch some rays at the top of your favorite ski hill? Before I tell you what I did, let me tell you why I did it…

Last week, I’d been notified that this very blog (running on Wordpress Version 2.2.2) was being exploited, and that I needed to upgrade to the latest version.

Now you can guess what I did this weekend. I not only upgraded JenTekk Blog, but also 5 other Wordpress websites to the newly released Wordpress v. 2.3.3 ! Oh yeah, and then I made a bee-line to my favorite tanning salon! :D

GiveMeaning - giving support and hope

February 6th, 2008

GiveMeaning

Last spring I blogged about a young boy named Tagg: Saving Mom - a 10 year old’s mission - who contacted me to assist him with raising funds to help his mom (Honnor) who is suffering accutely with rheumatoid arthritis. I quickly created a paypal donations webpage for them.

Tagg notified all his friends and family. I put the word out to ‘my people’… many who empathized and blogged about Taggs plight… thank you to each one!

Together we were able to raise over $3,000.00. However, eventually donations came to a stand still - that was until I’d heard about GiveMeaning.

Vancouver Joomla DemoCamp01 - join us!!

February 6th, 2008

Joomla! ... because open source matters

You may notice that JenTekk is becoming more and more involved in activities surrounding Joomla - as a participant and sponsor.

This is in part due to the fact that I adore the product - sure call me a Joomlarette if you want to! In addition, any projects that Rastin Mehr (from rmd Studio) and I collaborate on almost always involve using Joomla CMS. Rastin’s the fella that got me hooked on Joomla. I’m okay with this!

So I’d like to inform you of our next event: Vancouver Joomla DemoCamp01
